How do you tell the black gemstones apart?

JET

Good question. Sort of.

Lets take these four gemstones as an example: Jet, Obsidian, Onyx and Black Tourmaline.

First, the biggest difference is that only two of them are minerals. Mineral means it has crystalline structure and a repeating geometric pattern.

Jet comes from trees, so that is out. Not a mineral. It is compressed as coal into a form of stone, but is still very light compared to the others.

Obsidian is volcanic glass, that is out too, not a proper mineral. Can still look pretty though, very smooth and shiny. If you look at the raw pieces you will see a conchoidal fracture. That means a curved break-off point, for amateurs.

OBSIDIAN

ONYX

Onyx is a proper mineral. It will feel dense and heavy if you weigh it in your hand.  It is a bit duller than obsidian, and can have banding and grey spots.

Black Tourmaline is the last example, this is also a mineral. In raw form it's easy to separate from the others, but polished it can be more difficult. Usually it has divots and sometimes rust from its iron content.

Well, now you know.

Don't ask me about this again.
